Understanding Water pH
pH measures how acidic or alkaline water is on a scale of 0-14. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7.0. Most US tap water falls between 6.5 and 8.5, which is within the EPA's secondary standards.

Alkaline water (pH 8.0-9.5) has become popular due to health claims. Let's separate fact from marketing:

- Alkaline water does NOT "detoxify" your body — your kidneys and liver handle that
- Alkaline water does NOT prevent cancer — no clinical evidence supports this

- The "hydrogen" or "microclustered" water claims lack scientific support
Bottom Line: Alkaline water is safe to drink and may help with acid reflux. But most health claims are marketing, not science. If you like the taste, drink it. But don't pay a premium expecting health miracles.
How pH Filters Work
Most "alkaline" or "pH" water filters use one or more of these methods:

- RO water (pH 6.0-6.5): Slightly acidic due to dissolved CO₂. Remineralization filters raise pH to 7.0-7.5 and improve taste.
- Acid reflux: pH 8.8+ water may deactivate pepsin and provide temporary relief (Johns Hopkins research).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is alkaline water better for you?There's no strong clinical evidence that alkaline water provides health benefits beyond possible acid reflux relief. It's safe to drink but not a miracle cure.
Can alkaline water change my blood pH?No. Your blood pH is tightly regulated between 7.35-7.45 by your kidneys and lungs. Drinking alkaline water has minimal effect on blood chemistry.
Why does my RO water taste acidic?RO removes alkaline minerals, and dissolved CO₂ forms carbonic acid. This is normal and harmless. A remineralization filter raises pH back to neutral.
Are expensive alkaline water machines worth it?Kangen and similar machines ($2,000-5,000) are not worth the price for most people. Simple remineralization filters ($30-80) achieve similar pH adjustment at a fraction of the cost.
