The Lead Problem
Lead in drinking water has no safe level according to the CDC and EPA. Even low levels can cause developmental delays in children, kidney problems, and cardiovascular issues in adults. Lead typically enters water through corroding pipes, solder, and fixtures — not at the treatment plant.
EPA Action Level: 15 parts per billion (ppb). However, the CDC states there is NO safe level of lead exposure. If your water contains any detectable lead, filtration is recommended.
How Lead Filtration Works
Effective lead removal requires one of these technologies:
- Activated Carbon (Ion Exchange Modified): Standard carbon doesn't remove lead well. Carbon filters must be specifically formulated with ion exchange resin or catalytic surface modifications to capture lead ions. Look for NSF 53 certification.
- Reverse Osmosis: RO membranes remove >99% of lead. The 0.0001-micron pores block lead ions regardless of concentration.
- Distillation: Boiling and condensation removes all lead, but is energy-intensive and slow.
- KDF (Copper-Zinc): Redox reaction plates lead onto the media surface. Effective but limited capacity.
NSF Standards for Lead Removal
| Standard | What It Verifies | Reduction Required |
| NSF/ANSI 53 | Health effects — lead reduction | Must reduce 150 ppb input to ≤10 ppb |
| NSF/ANSI 62 | Distillation systems | Lead reduction certification |
| NSF/ANSI 58 | Reverse osmosis | Lead reduction included |
| NSF/ANSI 42 | Aesthetic effects only | Does NOT verify lead removal |
Critical: Do not trust a filter for lead removal unless it has NSF 53, 58, or 62 certification specifically for lead. "NSF certified" without the standard number is meaningless for lead.

Testing Your Water for Lead
Before choosing a filter, test your water:
- Check your Consumer Confidence Report (CCR): Municipal water utilities must publish annual reports showing lead levels at the treatment plant. Note: lead enters water in distribution pipes, so tap levels may differ.
- Home lead test kit: $15-30, gives instant results. Less accurate than lab testing.
- Certified laboratory test: $30-100, most accurate. Use an EPA-certified lab.
- Tap sampling technique: For accurate results, take a "first draw" sample (water that sat in pipes overnight) and a "flushed" sample (after running water 5 minutes). Compare results.
Long-Term Solutions Beyond Filtration
Filters are a temporary solution. Permanent lead remediation includes:
- Pipe replacement: Replace lead service lines and household plumbing ($3,000-15,000)
- PH adjustment: Municipal or whole-house pH adjustment reduces lead leaching
- Orthophosphate treatment: Some municipalities add orthophosphate to form a protective coating inside pipes
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Brita filters remove lead? The Brita Elite (Longlast+) filter is NSF 53 certified for lead reduction (>99%). Standard Brita filters are NOT certified for lead and should not be relied upon.
Can boiling water remove lead? No. Boiling concentrates lead because water evaporates but lead does not. Never boil water to remove lead — it makes the problem worse.
How do I know if my home has lead pipes?Scratch the pipe surface with sandpaper. Lead pipes are dull gray and the scratch will appear shiny silver. Copper pipes are orange-brown. Galvanized steel are gray and magnetic. When in doubt, test.
Will a whole-house filter remove lead?Whole-house carbon filters with NSF 53 certification can reduce lead, but point-of-use filters (under-sink, pitcher) are more reliable because they filter water right before consumption. RO is the gold standard.
