Iron Water Filter Guide

Remove Rust Stains, Metallic Taste, and Orange Water

The Iron Problem

Iron is the most common aesthetic water contaminant in well water. While rarely a health hazard at typical concentrations, iron causes orange/rust staining on fixtures, laundry, and dishes; metallic taste; and can clog plumbing and appliances. The EPA secondary standard for iron is 0.3 ppm (mg/L).

There are two forms of iron in water: ferrous iron (dissolved, clear water iron) and ferric iron (oxidized, red water iron). Each requires different treatment approaches.

Air Injection Oxidation (AIO) Systems

AIO is the most popular and effective method for removing ferrous iron. The system works by:

  1. Injecting air into the water via a built-in injector in the control valve head
  2. Air oxidizes dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) into ferric iron (Fe³⁺)
  3. Ferric iron precipitates out of solution as solid particles
  4. Specialized filter media (typically catalytic carbon or Filox) captures the oxidized iron
  5. Periodic backwash flushes trapped iron to drain
Best AIO Systems: SpringWell WS1 (1 ppm iron), Fleck 2510AIO (up to 10 ppm), Aquasana Rhino + Iron (up to 7 ppm). All cost $600-1,500 installed.

Important Considerations

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a water softener remove iron?Standard ion exchange softeners remove 1-2 ppm of ferrous (dissolved) iron. Above 3 ppm, iron fouls the resin bed and requires specialized iron-removing softener resin (fine mesh) or a dedicated iron filter.
How do I test for iron in my water?Use a home iron test kit ($10-20) for a rough estimate, or send a sample to a certified lab ($30-50) for accurate results including iron species (ferrous vs ferric) and total iron.
Why is my water brown after adding an iron filter?Initial startup can dislodge sediment in plumbing. Run water for 15-30 minutes to clear. If brown water persists, the filter may be undersized or the media needs backwashing.
Can carbon filters remove iron?Standard activated carbon has minimal iron removal capacity. Catalytic carbon can assist with low levels (<1 ppm) but is not a standalone solution for significant iron.
