Comparing Two Approaches to Comprehensive Water Filtration
Berkey gravity filters and reverse osmosis systems take fundamentally different approaches to water purification. Understanding these differences is key to choosing the right system for your needs.
Berkey uses gravity-fed ceramic-carbon filtration — a physical and adsorption process that removes contaminants as water passes through the filter element. It requires no power, no water pressure, and no plumbing.
Reverse Osmosis uses a semi-permeable membrane and applied pressure (either household water pressure or a booster pump) to force water through a membrane with 0.0001-micron pores. It removes virtually everything, including dissolved solids.
| Contaminant | Berkey (Black Elements) | Reverse Osmosis | Winner |

| Bacteria | >99.9999% | >99.9999% | Tie |
| Cysts | >99.99% | >99.99% | Tie |
| Viruses | Claims >99.999% | >99.9999% | RO |
| Lead | >99.9% | >99% | Tie |
| Fluoride | ~95% (with PF-2) | >95% | Tie |
| Arsenic | ~88% | >95% | RO |
| Nitrates | Minimal | >95% | RO |
| TDS/Hardness | No reduction | >95% removed | RO |

• You want a portable/emergency backup system
• You rent or can't modify plumbing
• You have well water with bacteria/cyst concerns
• You live off-grid or in an area with frequent outages
• You want water with natural minerals intact
• You value no water waste
• You want the simplest possible setup
• You want maximum contaminant removal (dissolved solids, nitrates, sodium)
• You have high TDS water (>500 ppm)
• You want instant filtered water from a dedicated faucet
• You prefer NSF-certified systems
• You have hard water and want soft drinking water
• You want the convenience of under-sink installation
• You have high sodium or nitrate levels in your water
Many households use both systems: RO for daily drinking water and Berkey as emergency backup. This provides the best of both worlds — maximum daily filtration plus off-grid resilience.
